Save the Earth

Did you know?

*Around 5,000 people die every year in Southern California because of air pollution.
*About 1% of US landfill space is full of desposable diapers, which take 500 years to break down.
*Americans use 50 million tons of paper annually - that's more than 850 million trees.
*Every year plastic waste in coastal areas around the world kills up to 100,000 marine mammals, 1 million sea birs, and millions if not more of fish.
*About 7,200 animal species in the world are threatened with extinction and many more become endangered each year.
*If you TV is off but it is plugged in, it still uses 1-2 watts of electricity.

Now that you know, do something about it!

Go camping

Camping can be a great fun. There are a few things you need to do to make your trip a safe one, though.

*Always tell a family member or friend where you are going and never go camping alone.
*Choose your campsite carefully. You can't camp wherever you like. Check for sings of animals and insects. You don't want to wake up on an anthill, do you?
*It can get pretty cold at night too, so remember to pack some warm clothes.
*Always take matches with you when camping, but make sure you build a proper campfire. You can't make a fire wherever you feel like.
*Have a flashlight to see at night and a waterproof tent and sleeping bag in case it rains.
*Never drink water from rivers. It can make you sick.
*Take a map, a compass, you cellphone, and a whistle with you. They can be a great help in case you get lost.
*Protect yourself against mosquitoes and other bugs. Have a good insect repellent with you.
*And remember, never go camping without a first-aid kit. It can be a real life-saver.

Jungle

Survival Tips!

Many people go to Africa or to the Amazon for a great wildlife experience these days. But how can you make sure you enjoy your exciting vacation in the jungle? Here are a few survival tips to help you stay safe...

Tip 1: Remember, you aren't Tarzan so you shouldn't swing from trees; branches can break easily and you can get seriously injured! Also, you shouldn't sleep under dead trees because they can fall on you. You should keep to the forest floor.

Tip 2:
Worms and insects such as ants are great to eat if you don't have foof in the jungle. A word of earning, though! You shouldn't eat insects that are brightly-colored or very hairy; they are often toxic and you can poison yourself if you eat them!

Tip 3: You should always check your boots and clothing for insects and snakes before you put them on. They love warm comfortable places to sleep in and your clothes are great for this. You should also check yours boots durning the day as leeches can get in there and can give you a nasty bite.

Tip 4: You should avoid swimming in rivers and lakes. If you are near water, you should always check for aligator tracks.

Follow these simple tips and you should have a trouble-free time in the jungle!

School of Fame

LaGuardia High School in New York is not like most schools. It's a famous school of music, art, and performing arts. Jennifer Aniston and Al Pacino are just two of LaGuardia's past students who became famous. So what's it like to go such a school?
Students at LaGuardia study Art, Music, Dance, and Theater, but they must also do all the normal school subjects such as English and Math. Classes startbat 8 am and end at 4 pm. There are up to 10 classes per day with a break of only 4 minutes between classes. Students have ay least three studio classes every day and six school subjects.
LaGuardia has rules just like every other scool. Students must show their ID cards to enter the building and must leave immediately after their last class of the day. They must dress well and must show respect to teachers and other students. Students must not use cell phone or pages in class or download music from the school computers. And of course, they must not smoke anywhere in the school.
Just like every other school, life at LaGuardia can be tough at times. The students know that they must work hard if they want to become stars of the future. That's the price of fame.

The walking house

Imagine a home that can walk slowly around town on six legs! This amazing 10ft-high house was the idea of a group of designers from Denmark who worked with engineers at MIT in Massachusetts, USA. The house has a living room, a kitchen, a toilet, and a bed. A computer controls the legs, but ther must always be three legs on the ground to keep it stable. The house does not travel very fast-about 160 meters an hour, but it can walk on any kind of land and can escape floods. It is very eco-friendly because it runs on solar and wind energy. It also collects rain water for use in the kitchen while a small wood burning stove provides heat inside. Do you need a change of scenery? Do you need to live closer to your job? Do you want to avoid your noisy neighbors? Simple-just take the house for a walk! How cool is that?
